ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date December 6, 2009 Issue GA-CW4909 Agricultural Summary December 7, 2009 COOL AND WET CONDITIONS Cool and wet conditions slowed crop progress in the state, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures ranged from the upper 40's to upper 60's. Average lows ranged from the upper 20's to the lower 40's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 2% short, 50% adequate, and 48% surplus. Heavy rain and frost affected some pasture fields and delayed planting of small grains. The rain received mid week slowed harvesting in some areas. Other activities included harvesting soybeans, planting small grain for grazing and applying fertilizer. County Extension Agents reported an average of 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT COMMENTS December 6, 2009 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Had about 1 inch of snow early Saturday morning; gone by 10am. Things continue to be wet and it is getting colder. Received 2.3 inches of rain on Wednesday, here at the extension office. Others reported as much as 3-4 inches elsewhere in the county. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Snow this weekend and two consecutive nights of below freezing temperatures, Saturday and Sunday nights. Routine care of livestock and poultry - snow expected Saturday. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Heavy rains and a hard frost change the completion of area pastures. Received 5+ inches of rain throughout county DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Wet and cold conditions for this week. Wet and cold conditions. Received 3+ inches rain mid week and cold much of last week but planting of small grains and soybean harvest wrapped up. It was an exceptional dry land soybean harvest this year. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We had a relatively dry week until Nov.30, and Dec.1 when we received .03 of an inch on both days and 2.11 inches on Dec. 2. Wet conditions are delaying planting of winter grazing and cereal grains. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Sporadic rain still hampering harvest. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Rain has delayed harvesting. Rainfall and clouds last week prevented from getting in the field to continue harvest. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Wet and cold. Trying to get last of cotton harvested. So far cotton looks great at 2.25 bales avg. and peanuts was good at about 3700 pounds or so avg. per acre. Cotton grades excellent and peanut grades fair to good. This week has been very wet. We had lot of rainfall this week, more than 4 inches. Cotton harvest continues to be affected by this wet weather. We have 20 percent of the cotton acres to harvest in Lowndes County. The cabbage crop is looking very good. Harvest will start up this week. Seven to ten good dry sunny days needed to finish cotton harvest. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
