DISTRICT COMMENTS December 13, 2009 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Received 5+ inches of rain this week, has stopped all work in fields. Received 3.25 inches of rain at the extension office; other areas reported as much as 5 inches of rain. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL One inch of snow provided moisture, but did not present any problems. Heavy rain and cold temperatures this week, activities limited to routine care of livestock and poultry DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST 2.5 inches this week DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Wet, wet, wet. Heavy rains and wind across much of the county on Monday and Tuesday a.m. Good to have harvest over. Fields are wet making routine care of livestock much more fun. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have a unique week. Rainfall in the amount of 4.07 inches. Planting has slowed to a stop. Wet! No field work right now. A lot of wheat probably won't get planted due to wet fields. A lot of wheat probably won't get planted due to wet fields. An 1.2 inch rain this week has continued the hampering of field work. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Still wet with more rain on the way. One field where I have a cotton variety plot still has water running out of it. Just barely dry enough to get a few soybeans this week and a little cotton. I only know of one peanut field needing to be thrashed although there are bits and pieces of fields that have wet spots. Wheat acres down and wheat is slow to emerge. Peanut hay is moldy and much of it is very poor quality this year. Just got our second hard freeze so grass has remained green competing with over seeded annuals. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Stop and start harvest conditions due to rain have further delayed finishing up the cotton, soybean and pecan harvest. Rain continues to delay harvest. Rain has slowed down field activities again. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Wet and miserable. About to wind up this year. Hay sales down and reported that a lot of horse owners are selling out and not buying quality hay in Florida. Poultry plant closing is taking its toll on our local and area economy and especially bad during the Christmas season. Growers worried about what to plant next year and commodity prices. This is one year we will all be glad when it's over. Happy New Year 2010! DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
