DISTRICT COMMENTS January 24, 2010 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Two inches of rain over the weekend at the office, other areas of the county got more. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Horrible growing conditions for pastures and hayfields. Good heavy and steady rain yesterday. Most places in the county received around 2 inches. Local flooding/standing water in bottomlands was observed through out the county. Rain this week limited activities to routine care of livestock and poultry DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Rains and moderate temperatures stimulate root growth for pasture grasses. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Extremely wet conditions. Farmers becoming more concerned about getting into the fields for planting in the spring if rains continue. Rain of 2-3" locally has local creeks flooding into lower creek land. We have had excess rainfall now. Rainfall is in excess now. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We've gotten our share of rainfall over the past 7 days. We received 1.81 inches on Jan. 16, and .82 inches on Jan. 17. Hopefully, the cold snap will suppress insect pest populations. Very wet. Cold weather has stunted growth of forages in pastures and made it necessary to feed more hay. Most farmers have finished harvest of soybeans and cotton. Field extremely wet. Having difficulty feeding cattle due to the wetness of pastures, roads, etc. trying to move hay. Wet! Over 3 inches or more fell last week. Fields saturated. Still have cotton in fields. Wheat not growing. Rain and wind helped to get remaining pecans off the trees. Extremely wet conditions continuing to be a hardship on livestock and farmers. Pasture flooding and saturated soils continue to be a problem. Even though there was only one day of rain the water table is so high you can't work in the field. Wet soil conditions are causing problems for farmers. Fields are too wet to work. Fertilization and spraying for weeds efforts are being postponed due to soggy fields. Ponds are running over with water with some washing out completely. A lot of fields now have significant erosion due to the extended rainy periods from this winter. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL We had 3 days of warmer, sunny weather that let wheat and winter annuals for grazing begin to start growing again. Rain on wet soils may offset the previous few days of good weather. Two more rain events are keeping things very wet. Wheat has struggled and is still very small as we get close to time for topdressing nitrogen. I'm afraid we're lacking good tiller growth. Warmer temps may bring grazing back to average. With two hard weeks including late night cotton-picking, we now have about 98% harvested. Several fields still have 5-15 acres spots too wet to pick. Cold and wet, wet, wet. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Extreme rain is now in progress which has already saturated the soil and left much water on top of the ground. Heavy rain on Thursday, last week with some minor flooding. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Lanier County has had 6 inches of rain this past week with more projected for Sunday. We have a lot of standing water in pastures and fields. This week has been very wet with high rainfall occurring. Six inches of rainfall with more on the way has finished off what cotton was left in the field to be harvested;.approx 3% of our acreage DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
