DISTRICT COMMENTS January 31, 2010 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Sleet and snow on Friday afternoon caused typical chaos in our region. Cold temperatures kept most side roads icy into Saturday morning and Sunday morning. Another 3" of rain has everything saturated. Hard freeze over the weekend. We received 0.25 inches precipitation last week - mixture of rain, sleet and snow on 1/29/10 and into 1/30/10. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Snow and sleet expected tonight and into tomorrow morning - major activity is routine care of livestock and poultry. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST We received three more inches of rain this week. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Still wet. We received three inches of rain on already moist soils. Need some dry days. We received 3.5 inches of rain on already moist ground. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We received quite a bit of rainfall over the past 7 days. Our rainfall amounts were .99, 1.43 and .09. The fields are too wet for normal field operations. Farmers need apply fertilizer, spray for weeds and do land preparation now but they can't stand up in the fields. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL More rain keeping fields saturated with more rain coming by end of this week. The timing of these rains is what is frustrating-about every 5-6 days. The return of hard freezing nights is continuing to retard wheat and pasture growth. The warmer spell last week allowed some wheat to grow and tiller but I'm afraid we're getting late in the season with less than desirable growth. Lack probably 300-350 acres of cotton. Much of the cotton picked after the first of the year got wet and modules lost from 10-30%. Seed, especially, was rotted and ruined. Ginners having to dry lint much longer to try and gin it. Ryegrass grazing is slow, but sure with sunnier days getting the high up to mid-50's. Soils continue to remain saturated. Winter wheat is undergoing stress due to wet conditions. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Excessive soil moisture levels for the past 3 months have caused many problems with Vegetables, Winter Grazing, Small Grains, and Cotton Harvest. Soil is still wet. We received 10+ inches of precipitation so far this month. We still have wet conditions. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL This has been a drying out week for farmers in Lowndes County, Georgia. The rains are scheduled to return this weekend. We need more drying out weather for small grains to grow. Late planted wheat is not tilling very well in the cold, wet soil. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
