DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Plenty of moisture in the ground. Longer days will hopefully improve fescue pasture quality over the next few weeks. A few days of warmer weather and dry conditions have improved field conditions; still too wet in some areas to get much field work done. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Warmer, slightly drier conditions. Wheat and winter grazing looks a little better. Some nitrogen spread on drier fields, still many fields that are too wet. Winter annuals have not grown much due to the prolonged periods of cold weather which have kept the soil temps low. Warm weather is in the forecast. Warmer, slightly drier conditions. Wheat condition backing up; soils are saturated; temporary winter forages in short supply; feeding cattle & looking for dry ground. Moisture has let up some but still unseasonably cold. Cool season annuals are not growing. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have gotten more than our share of rainfall. We also received 3 and 1/2 inches of snow over the past weekend. Things are looking up in terms of groundwater as we are at a significant surplus. Getting a little drying out this week. Looking back at our rainfall reports, Monroe county measured 77.63 inches of rain for the year 2009. This is an average from 13 locations throughout the county. In the six months from August 2009 to Jan 2010 we measured 47.55 inches. Extreme cold and rain is likely to reduce small grain yields. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Sunshine and warmer weather are needed to help wheat and winter pastures. Sun is out and fields are finally drying. Some nitrogen applied to small grains. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Fields are drying out and the soil is becoming dry enough to operate equipment on it, but many fields have wet spots in them. Soil temperatures remain quite cool. Averaged about 45 degrees at depth of 4 inches this week. Some sweet corn planted end of this week, but only small acreage. Winter grazing poor condition across county. Winter cover crops exhibiting poor growth (conservation tillage cover crops). Land preparation for spring vegetables delayed due to wet and cool soils. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL This week like the past weeks have been wet and very cold. Vegetable farmers are getting concern over the long wet condition of their fields, preventing them from treating their vegetable land. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
