ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date March 9, 2010 Issue GA-CW1010 Agricultural Summary March 9, 2010 IMPROVED CONDITIONS For the week ending March 7, 2010, favorable conditions at the end of the week allowed fields to continue to dry out, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures ranged from the lower 50's to lower 60's. Lows averaged from the upper 20's to the mid 30's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 1% short, 65% adequate, and 34% surplus. Most area's received a quarter inch or more of precipitation on Tuesday; limited to no rainfall was reported the rest of the week. Some of the winter wheat has jointed and peaches are beginning to bloom in southern counties. Field activities included harrowing, shredding cotton stalks, and preparing fields for planting. Winter grazing continues to be limited. Other activities included getting equipment ready for planting corn, clipping tobacco plants in greenhouses, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork.
