ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date April 19, 2010 Issue GA-CW1610 Agricultural Summary April 19, 2010 DRY AND WARM CONDITIONS For the week ending April 18, 2010, warm and sunny conditions resulted in dry topsoil moisture, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures ranged from the lower 70's to upper 80's. Low temperatures averaged from the low 40's to mid 50's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 3% very short, 40% short, 55% adequate, and 2% surplus. Planting is progressing due to the warmer temperatures. Irrigation has been used to help corn. Cotton planting and onion harvest is underway. Pigweed has appeared in some fields. Pastures have been slow to green due to the dry weather. Other activities for the week included applying herbicides to cotton and peanuts and spreading poultry litter as well as other fertilizers. County Extension Agents reported an average of 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Sunny and warm this week, major activities include the spreading of poultry litter on pasture and hay fields DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Top soil moisture drying quickly. Rain needed. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Dry. We are getting very dry. Dry conditions. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We are still behind in planting our spring crops. We're halfway there. Topsoil moisture at a premium. Top three inches very dry. Irrigation being used to get corn up. Dry land growers waiting on rain. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Weather conditions have been good for upcoming planting of cotton, peanuts, and eventually soybeans. Soil is beginning to dry out some, and forecasted rains will be needed for activation of herbicides and germination of seeds. Farmers are anticipating the forecasted rain to have good moisture to plant in. Pigweed is showing its ugly face as soil temperatures and light requirements are being meet for its germination. All is looking well at this point and hopefully the Iceland volcano cloud will not impact farming operations. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Dry. Need some rainfall. Tobacco planting going well and field work. Applying burn down herbicides for cotton and peanuts and applying lime and fertilizers. Feeding livestock hay and alt. feeds. Pastures slow to green up due to dry weather. Planting for major row crops is beginning due to warmer temperatures. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
