Cool season hay fields are being cut. Lower hayfields / pastures showing dead or slow to green acres due to wet soil conditions. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Routine care of livestock and poultry. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Putting in some ryegrass and fescue hay, liming, fertilizing and weed control in forages; wheat and various small grains filling heads. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We are starting to catch up on our planting within the county. We did get 2.94 inches of rainfall during the round of rainfall on Tuesday. Rain replenished topsoil. Planting began again in earnest late in the week. We had lots of rain last Monday, between 2.5 to 5.2 inches across county. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Off to a good start this year. Corn looks really good compared to this time last year when the heavy rains washed out stands. This year, the early warm weather allowed growers little time between planting, herbicide spraying and side-dressing/lay-by. Rain on April 26 allowed planting to commence and another inch on May 3 has maintained good soil conditions so planting of peanuts and cotton are both ahead of schedule. We have a pretty fair amount of cotton and peanuts already up. Bermuda grass has taken off without a frost/freeze to slow it down and ryegrass is tailing off. Millet has been planted for grazing. Wheat stands are noticeably thinner than usual due to late planting and hard cold which reduced tilling. Lack of canopy allowed a lot of winter annual weeds to encroach and reduce head size. Crop will be average. Cattle prices have come back and we have two new cattle producers who moved into the county. Seems cattle numbers are picking up a little county-wide. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Around 4 inches of rain was received in the county earlier this week. Planting progress slowed down by the heavy rain showers we received this past week. Some fields still have standing water 5 days later. Peanut planting progressed if the conditions allowed. Burn down of weeds or cover crops. Planting cotton and some peanuts. Side- dressing tobacco. Applying pre-emergent herbicides on some fields. Cutting some hay. Cabbage looks good. Tomatoes and Sweet corn looks good. So far great planting weather. We got about an inch and one half this week. TSWV in tobacco is <1% so far. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL This past week we got 2 plus inches of rain in most of the county last week. This was a much needed rain to keep growers planting cotton and peanuts. The weather turn cool with night time temperature in the mid 50's, this may cause some issues with peanuts. Wet conditions delays field work and causes planting delays. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
