DISTRICT COMMENTS May 16, 2010 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Received 0.35 inches rain for the week, most of it yesterday. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Harvesting of wheat hay, corn planting has begun. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Putting in hay; lime, fertilizer and weed control in forages. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have been able to get most of our planting done. We did get .16 of an inch of rainfall on may 10th. Farmers were very busy in the hay fields this week. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Planting of cotton and peanuts ahead of schedule as growers rushed to take advantage of two rains which kept up soil moisture. Wheat is turning/maturing and may not be as late as thought although most stands are thinner than usual and yields will only be average. Ryegrass is falling back to reveal good Bermuda grass growth although we still experience that lag time between forage species. Soybean planting has been accomplished mainly on irrigated fields due to soybeans' reluctance to germinate in anything less than perfect moisture. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST We are experiencing warm temperatures. Much of the wheat is beginning to dry down. Cotton and Peanuts were being planted. Some corn is still being planted due to weather conditions slowing up some farmers. Farmers took advantage of the moisture this week to go full speed on planting peanuts with some completely finishing up this week. Corn is yellowing due to environmental conditions (too much rain). Growers were concerned but conditions are improving. Hopefully this means we will have enough rain this season to stay out of a drought or drought-like conditions. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Could use a rain shower. Planting cotton and some peanuts. Some soil dry. Good news that Pilgrim's Pride Poultry will reopen soon. Details unclear but hopefully a blessing and great news for our growers. This past week has been great for planting cotton soybeans and peanuts. This Planting time fit our fall harvest window for dry periods during harvesting. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
