Please see PDF for weather data. DISTRICT COMMENTS June 20, 2010 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Severe thunderstorms on Thursday, June 17th with wind damage. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Heat stress in evident in a few crops. Specifically seeing possible heat stress in bunch winegrape variety Norton. Grower is having petioles tissue tested to insure it is not a nutrient problem. Spotty rains, some areas very dry, so adequate that crop quality varies greatly. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Rain spotty; some very dry areas in county. Dryland corn suffering in heat. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have been in the midst of a heatwave. We have had 7 straight days of 90+ temperatures. We have gotten late evening thunderstorms on 4 days which has given us a rainfall total of 1.82 inches. Our veggie crops are looking good despite the heat. If we continue to get the rainfall late at night, we should be okay. Heat index very high this week. Actual temps reached 100 Tuesday. Heat is stressing livestock and farmers. Spotty rains enough to keep moisture in the soil in most places. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL All planting done with just enough moisture left after wheat harvest to finish. Wheat yields and test weights were mostly just decent and the same for rye although oats did pretty well. Cotton is squaring and peanuts blooming in many fields. Got some high heat this week and the showers are widely scattered with actual rainfall varying from 0.1" to 1.4". Have confirmed southern corn blight, northern corn leaf blight and southern rust in corn fields. Growers have sprayed about 90% of acres and another spray is possible. Stinkbugs not too bad. Weed control, overall, is very good this year as growers are taking the resistant pigweed very seriously now and the use of good pre-emerge herbicides has helped tremendously as we got the rain at the right time to activate herbicides. Scattered showers. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Disease continues to be a threat to crops as the weather conditions favor the development and spread. We are getting some moisture from afternoon/evening showers that are helping keep some areas moist but I do not think it is enough to get the moisture down deep. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL This past week continues to be very hot with spotted rainfall in the county. This hot weather is good for fighting weeds. The hot weather has damage the potential corn yield for farmers. We need a good rain. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST Isolated rainfall this week; a few areas to wet; a few areas to dry. Extremely hot this week.
