ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 18, 2010 Issue GA-CW2910 Agricultural Summary July 19, 2010 HOT TEMPERATURES Continue For the week ending July 18, 2010, the state experienced scattered rains, though hot conditions still prevailed, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures ranged from the upper 80's to the mid 90's. Low temperatures remained in the low 70's. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 4% very short, 39% short, 54% adequate, and 3% surplus. Sorghum planting was almost complete. Almost all corn was in the dough stage and over half was denting with some beginning to mature. Almost all cotton had squared and over half was setting bolls. Three quarters of peanuts were pegging. Watermelon harvest was almost done. Peach harvest was also active. Other activities for the week included routine care of livestock, fertilizing crops, weed control and baling hay. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Still pretty dry. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Last soybeans planted; fertilizing others along with hay and pasture land; routine care of livestock; very beneficial rain fell over most of county. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We have gotten heavy rains in the past 7 days. Our crops are looking okay. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Rain continues to be very spotty. Most farming areas of the county are very dry, but a few spots have gotten adequate rain. Scattered showers and HOT. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Showers are again very spotty throughout the county. Heat index of 100+ every day this week is pushing irrigation to the max and crops are progressing rapidly because of the heat. Insect pressure is starting to rise, mostly noticing Corn Earworms. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL This past week was good for agriculture in county. We had good rainfall and good growing conditions for this past week. We need six to eight more weeks like this past week.
