DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Hay baling continues this week, commercial grape harvest continues, rain needed Dry. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Armyworms in forages still on a roll. Another dry week took most of the soil moisture; armyworms continue in hayfields; millet harvest began with fair to average yields; hay rolled and grass put down. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We are dry as dry can be. Dry, need rain; crops showing drought stress; peanut harvest has begun; cotton defoliation to begin soon; haying continues. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Have begun doing peanut maturity checks/samples and some fields will be very early (125 days) while others are progressing normally and have another 2-2.5 weeks. Planting dates varied over 5 weeks and maturity is going to be highly variable field to field. Some dry land cotton defoliation has begun and some irrigated fields will be ready to defoliate next week. Corn harvest in winding down and we are still not seeing much insect pressure in soybeans. Continued hot, dry weather has caused yield potential of all crops to drop, somewhat dramatically, over the past three weeks. Peanuts need a good late August rain and not many fields got it. Grower expectations are falling. Cotton quit and is opening in many dry and irrigated fields but scattered showers have boll-locked plants in several places. Many soybean fields planted after wheat never really got a good start and have struggled the whole summer. Armyworms continue to be a headache for hay/pasture owners with a large percentage having already sprayed twice and can see more coming. For the last several weeks, I have found some worms in about 70% of the fields where I stop to look for them. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Some soybeans in the north part of the county are blooming that are short and have not filled in the row middles at all. Rains last week were a mixed blessing. The rain was tough on open, dry land cotton because it's started growing and blooming again with the open cotton hard locking and beginning to see mold. Good for dry land peanuts for they are trying to put on a crop now and some of them are already 105 days old and haven't had a crop set yet. We've got to get something out of the systems in the Atlantic if we are going to make a dry land peanut crop in our county. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Fixing to be digging early planted cotton and peanuts soon. Will defoliate some cotton next week and dig peanuts in about 2 weeks. Cutting hay. Finishing up tobacco. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
