DISTRICT COMMENTS October 31, 2010 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST Received 2.8 inches of rain over three days, Monday-Wednesday. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Much needed rain should help winter grazing and over seeding germinate. More rain desperately needed to establish. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Our area got the first "good" rain we have had in months, talking with farmers anywhere from 2-3 inches since last Sunday. Rainfall last week improved soil moisture conditions allowing planting of winter grazing and the first of the small grains went in. Soybeans are fast approaching harvest which may begin this week. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We received .55 and .80 of rainfall respectively on Tuesday and Wednesday. Other than that we have been very dry, hot and humid. Some places on county received good rains on Monday and Wednesday of up to one inch. These rains were widely scattered but surely needed. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Got about 0.6" of rain, pretty much county wide, over a period of 3 days. Kept folks out the field due to moist, cloudy, humid conditions. Soybeans shattering in places where MG V's have been in the field too long while growers harvested peanuts and cotton. Peanuts grading in the mid-70's. Getting very good irrigated peanut and cotton yields. Not much winter grain planted. Dry weather was a problem and seed availability is another big problem. We'll be planting some varieties we don't know much about. Still battling dry conditions and armyworms. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Pecan harvest finally underway late in the week. Harvest is wide open. Some peanuts were abandoned due to a poor crop brought about by severe drought conditions. Lack of rainfall has prevented some dryland pecans from filling out. Some soybean plants are extremely short due to a lack of rainfall. Some cotton fields, both irrigated and dryland, have poorer than normal crops. Checked the county Wednesday to verify we missed the rains earlier in the week. During Wednesday night the front came through and has given us much needed showers. That's the only moisture we've had in the county during the month of October. We appreciate what we have been given. Showers will help kick-start preparation for wheat planting and will let us finish digging peanuts. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
