ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 7, 2010 Issue GA-CW4510 Agricultural Summary November 8, 2010 Frost For the week ending November 7, 2010, many parts of the state dropped below freezing for the first time this fall, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Georgia Field Office. Daily average high temperatures were in the mid 50's to mid 70's. Low temperatures were in the lower 30's to lower 50's. An average of a half of an inch of precipitation fell during the week. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 12% very short, 31% short, 53% adequate, and 4% surplus. Virtually the entire soybean crop has dropped leaves and over a third of the crop has been harvested. Nearly two-thirds of the sorghum has been harvested for grain. Almost three-quarters of the cotton have been harvested. Nearly a quarter of the winter wheat has been planted. The first fields of onions have been transplanted. Most of peanuts have been dug and over three-quarters have been harvested. Pecan harvest is nearly a quarter complete. Over half of the rye and two-thirds of the oats have been planted. Other activities included routine care of livestock and poultry. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Rain still needed to improve conditions for winter grazing. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL We had the first killing frost of the season this week. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL We received .98 of an inch of rainfall over the past 7 days. Rain early in week. Scattered frost over the weekend. Gearing up for small grain planting. Harvesting of cotton, soybeans and peanuts continues. A couple of small rains this week have helped keep soil moisture at decent levels. Cooler temps arriving slowing winter grazing growth. More and more grazing has been put in these past two weeks as we've gotten a few rains to allow the plantings. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Showers have us shut down for the weekend. We'll wait to see how cold it gets after the front passes. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Still Dry. Did not get much rain from weather front. Cold temp will end cotton and peanut maturity. Most cotton is defoliated and a lot picked. Peanuts about over. A few late fields dug before front.
