in-crop-weather State Indiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date August 16, 2009 IN-CW081709 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY Many northern and central counties continued to experience dry conditions with drought stress becoming evident in crop fields, according to the Indiana Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. There were a few reports of white mold, aphids and sudden death syndrome in soybean fields. A few producers were finishing second cuttings of hay while others were working on third cuttings. Producers were busy visiting FSA offices as the deadline for enrolling in the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) program was August 14. Many people enjoyed a trip to the State Fair during the week. FIELD CROPS REPORT There were 5.9 days suitable for field work during the week. Ninety -seven percent of the corn crop has silked compared with 96 percent last year and 99 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-two percent of the corn is in dough compared to 45 percent last year and 72 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated 59 percent good to excellent compared with 68 percent last year at this time. Ninety percent of the soybean acreage is blooming compared with 91 percent last year and 96 percent for the 5-year average. Sixty-two percent of the soybean acreage is setting pods compared to 59 percent last year and 80 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated 60 percent good to excellent compared with 63 percent last year at this time. The third cutting of alfalfa hay is 29 percent complete compared with 49 percent last year and 51 percent for the 5-year average. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT The hot, dry weather caused pasture condition to decline further and is now rated 62 percent good to excellent compared with 55 percent last year at this time. Livestock remain in mostly good condition with only minor stress being reported.
