Iowa Agricultural Facts


2007

Iowa had 88,400 farms utilizing 31,500,000 acres.

Iowa led the nation in the production of pork, corn, soybeans, and eggs.

Iowa ranked second in the nation in cash receipts for farm marketings, red meat production, value of principal crops, and pig crop.

Iowa ranked third in the nation for number of farms and farm production expenses.

On December 1, 2007 Iowa had 19.4 million hogs.

On January 1, 2008 Iowa had 4,000,000 cattle and calves; 260,000 sheep and lambs; and 860,000 cattle on feed.

Corn was planted on 14.20 million acres in Iowa with 13.85 million acres harvested for grain. Iowa farmers harvested 2.37 billion bushels of corn with a yield of 171 bushels per acre. Iowa produced 18 percent of the nation’s corn for grain.

Iowa farmers planted 8.55 million acres of soybeans, and 8.52 million acres were harvested for beans in 2007. Iowa farmers harvested 438.8 million bushels of soybeans with an average yield of 51.5 bushels per acre or nearly 17 percent of the nation’s soybeans.

A hen lays an average of 265 eggs per year. Total Iowa egg production for 2007 was 13.87 billion eggs. The average number of layers in Iowa during 2007 was 52.4 million.
