KS-WEATHER United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office Crop Weather Kansas Agricultural Statistics Cooperating with the Kansas Department of Agriculture PO Box 3534 Topeka KS 66601-3534 (785)233-2230 www.nass.usda.gov/ks nass-ks@nass.usda.gov Released: March 5, 2007 Volume 07 No. 10 Agricultural Summary: The State experienced above average temperatures throughout most of the month. Showers were very light and scattered with areas in the northeastern part of the State receiving slightly higher amounts. Most areas of the State received moderate amounts of precipitation in the form of snow and rain the second and third weeks of the month. Temperatures varied from week to week, falling below average during the third week but climbing back to above average the last week of February. Topsoil moisture was rated 2 percent very short, 4 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus. Field Crop Report: Wheat condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Eighty-four percent of the State reported no wind damage to wheat, while 14 percent reported light wind damage, and 2 percent reported moderate wind damage. Freeze damage has been light with 75 percent of the wheat having no damage, 20 percent receiving light damage, 3 percent receiving moderate damage, and 2 percent receiving severe damage. Some reporters in the western third of the State indicated much of the wheat crop was still under snow cover, making it difficult to ascertain damage and condition. Feed Supplies Report: Feed grain supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 15 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 22 percent very short, 36 percent short, and 42 percent adequate. Reporters indicated the wet conditions and cooler temperatures have made calving difficult for some producers and feed supplies in the western parts of the State remain in short supply.
