Wheat planting and fall harvesting of corn, soybeans, and sorghum were the primary activities, but were slowed by rains across the state. Most of Kansas received some precipitation, with heavy rainfall in the north-central and north eastern part of the state, over 3 inches in some areas. Topsoil moisture was rated 10 percent very short, 41 percent short, and 49 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture was rated 8 percent very short, 39 percent short, and 53 percent adequate. Field Crop Report: Seventy-one percent of the wheat has been planted, compared to 84 percent for last year and 80 percent for the 5-year average. Thirty-eight percent has emerged, compared to 51 percent in 2006 and 53 percent for the 5-year average. Eighty-three percent of corn has been harvested compared to 79 percent last year and 78 percent for the 5-year average. Ninety-one percent of the soybeans are dropping leaves, compared to 96 percent previous year and 95 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-three percent of soybeans have been harvested, compared to 47 last year and 48 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 7 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Eighty-six percent of sorghum is mature, compared to 67 percent last year and 74 percent for the 5- year average. Thirty-seven percent of sorghum has been harvested, compared to 33 percent last year and 34 for the 5- year average. Sorghum condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. Eighty-eight percent of the fourth cutting alfalfa has been harvested, compared to 89 percent last year and 85 percent for the 5-year average. Ninety-two percent of sunflowers are in the bracts yellow stage, compared to 91 percent last year and 94 percent for the 5-year average. Eighty percent is in the mature dry down stage, compared to 72 percent last year and 75 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-nine percent of sunflowers have been harvested, compared to 19 percent last year and 30 percent for the 5-year average. Sunflower condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 47 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Seventy percent of the cotton is in the bolls open stage, compared to 64 percent last year and 65 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition was rated 15 percent poor, 45 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Feed Supplies Report: Range and pasture conditions were rated 5 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 7 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 7 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 16 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Reports indicated that cattle are being turned out onto crop residue and having water hauled to them.
