Producers averaged 5.6 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture is rated at 5 percent very short, 16 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated at 6 percent very short, 15 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Primary farm activity involved cutting alfalfa hay, spraying of herbicides on corn and fungicides on wheat, and planting of corn, soybeans, sorghum, sunflowers, and cotton. Field Crop Report: Wheat is estimated at 97 percent jointed, compared to 100 percent for both the previous year and the 5-year average. Forty-six percent of the crop was headed, compared to 77 percent last year and 86 percent for the 5- year average. Wheat condition is rated 7 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Insect infestation of the wheat crop is rated at 80 percent none, 16 percent light, and 4 percent moderate. Disease infestation is rated at 61 percent none, 27 percent light, 10 percent moderate, and 2 percent severe. Reports across the State indicate that leaf rust is the leading disease affecting the wheat crop. Eighty-seven percent of corn has been planted, the same as last year and compared to 92 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-one percent of the crop has emerged, compared to 56 percent in 2007, and 64 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 43 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Ten percent of the sorghum has been planted, compared to 8 percent last year and 16 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-one percent of the soybeans have been planted, compared to 20 percent last year and 30 percent for the 5-year average. Soybeans are 2 percent emerged, compared to 3 percent in 2007 and 9 percent for the 5-year average. Five percent of cotton has been planted, compared to 7 percent for the previous year and 13 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-six percent of the first cutting of alfalfa has been completed, compared to 14 percent last year and 35 percent for the 5-year average. Feed Supplies Report: Range and pasture conditions were rated at 7 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 41 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 10 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 14 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were estimated at 3 percent very short, 6 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus.
