Temperatures were warm as well reaching over 90 degrees across Kansas. Producers averaged 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture is rated as 8 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated as 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Fieldwork activities included beginning wheat harvest, cutting alfalfa, pesticide application, and planting remaining row crops. Field Crop Report: Ninety-five percent of the wheat is turning color, compared to 91 percent last year and 97 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-eight percent is considered ripe for harvest, compared to 34 percent the previous year and 70 percent for the 5-year average. Five percent has been harvested, the same as 2008 but behind the 5-year average of 31 percent. The wheat condition is rated as 6 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 40 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Corn condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. Eighty-three percent of the sorghum has been planted, ahead of the previous year at 71 percent but the same as the 5-year average. Sixty-three percent has emerged, compared to 48 percent for last year and 67 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 82 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Ninety percent of the soybeans have been planted, compared to 77 percent last year and 87 percent for the 5-year average. Eighty-four percent have emerged, compared to 68 percent the previous year and 79 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Ninety-one percent of the cotton is planted, compared to 100 percent the previous year and 93 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated as 4 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Sixty-four percent of the sunflowers have been planted, compared to 68 percent the previous year and 76 percent for the 5-year average. Forty percent have emerged, compared to 31 percent for 2008 and 52 percent for the 5-year average. Sunflower condition is rated 2 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 17 percent fair, 77 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Fifteen percent of the second cutting of alfalfa has been completed, compared to 19 percent the previous year and 32 percent for the 5-year average. Feed Supplies Report: Range and pasture condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 93 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were estimated as 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus.
