The heaviest amounts were reported in the Central and Eastern areas. Reports of six inches or more were recorded in Leavenworth and Cherokee Counties and over five inches in Labette County. Producers averaged 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture is rated as 1 percent very short, 19 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated as 4 percent very short, 24 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Farm activities for the week included cutting alfalfa and preparing equipment to harvest fall row crops. Field Crop Report: Eighty-six percent of the corn is in the dough stage, compared to 87 percent in 2008 and 92 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-five percent is in the dent stage, compared to 51 percent last year and 65 percent for the 5- year average. Six percent is mature, compared to 5 percent the previous year and 17 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated as 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. Eighty percent of the sorghum is headed, compared to 79 percent last year and 84 percent for the 5-year average. Eleven percent is coloring, compared to 23 percent in 2008 and 30 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 1 very poor, 5 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Ninety-five percent of the soybeans are blooming, compared to 93 percent the previous year and 96 percent for the 5-year average. Eighty-four percent are setting pods, compared to 76 percent in 2008 and 82 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 17 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 17 percent excellent. Eighty-five percent of the cotton is setting bolls, compared to 89 percent last year and the 5-year average of 88 percent. Five percent have bolls opening, compared to none in 2008 and 2 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated as 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Seventy-three percent of the sunflowers are in bloom, compared to 75 percent the previous year and 83 percent for the 5-year average. Twelve percent are in the ray flower dry stage, compared to 16 percent last year and 23 percent for the 5-year average. Four percent are having bracts yellow, the same as 2008 and the 5-year average. Sunflower condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Ninety-one percent of the third cutting of alfalfa has been completed, compared to 90 percent the previous year and 93 percent for the 5-year average. Eleven percent of the fourth cutting has been completed, compared to 22 percent in 2008 and 28 percent for the 5-year average. Feed Supplies Report: Range and pasture condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated as 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 91 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated as 5 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated as 2 percent very short, 9 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.
