The northern half of the state received significant precipitation with Ellsworth, Saline, and Ottawa counties receiving the most rain last week. Producers averaged 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture is rated as 2 percent very short, 14 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated as 3 percent very short, 20 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Fieldwork activities for the week included cutting alfalfa, and harvesting silage and early corn for grain. Field Crop Report: Row crop progress continues to lag this year, with corn dent and sorghum coloring behind average. Ninety-three percent of the corn is in the dough stage, above the 91 percent in 2008 but behind 96 percent for the 5-year average. Sixty-five percent is in the dent stage, behind the 66 percent last year and 77 percent for the 5-year average. Twelve percent of the crop has reached maturity, lagging 2 percent behind the previous year and 17 percent behind the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated as 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. The sorghum crop has reached 91 percent headed, ahead of both the 85 percent last year and 90 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-six percent is coloring, below both the 38 percent in 2008 and 45 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 1 very poor, 5 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Ninety-three percent of the soybeans are setting pods, above both the 87 percent the previous year and 90 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 17 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. Ninety-five percent of the cotton is setting bolls, below the 99 percent last year but above the 5-year average of 91 percent. Six percent have bolls opening, behind the 9 percent in 2008 but the same as the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated as 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Eighty-three percent of the sunflowers are in bloom, behind both the previous year of 84 percent and the 5-year average of 89 percent. Twenty-six percent are in the ray flower dry stage, below the 27 percent last year and 36 percent for the 5-year average. Eight percent are having bracts yellow, ahead of 2008 at 7 percent but behind the 5-year average of 10 percent. Sunflower condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Ninety-four percent of the third cutting of alfalfa has been completed, below both the previous year and the 5-year average at 99 and 97 percent, respectively. Seventeen percent of the fourth cutting has been completed, way behind the 37 percent in 2008 and the 5-year average of 41 percent. Feed Supplies Report: Range and pasture condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 93 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated as 2 percent very short, 6 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.
