High temperatures reached the 70’s and low 80’s, and precipitation was very limited with only light amounts reported in the North Central and Northeast districts. With the change in the weather last week producers averaged 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies across Kansas were rated as 2 percent short, 90 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Activities for the week included catching up on corn, sorghum, sunflower, and soybean harvest, along with planting winter wheat. Field Crop Report: Farmers took full advantage of the weather last week as harvest progressed substantially despite all row crops still being well behind the average progress. Sorghum and sunflowers advanced the most, gaining 20 percentage points each, while soybeans advanced 17 points and corn advanced 16 points. Sixty-eight percent of the corn crop has been harvested, behind both last year at 80 percent and the 5-year average of 93 percent. Ninety-six percent of the sorghum crop has reached maturity, ahead of last year at 95 percent but behind the 5-year average of 98 percent. Thirty-seven percent of the sorghum crop has been harvested, behind 2008 at 56 percent and 75 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. Seventy-two percent of the soybean crop has been harvested, behind 2008 at 82 percent and the 5-year average of 88 percent. Ninety percent of the winter wheat has been planted, behind last year’s 94 percent and the 5-year average of 97 percent. Seventy-eight percent has emerged, behind 86 percent last year and the 5-year average of 87 percent. Wheat condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Eighty-eight percent of the cotton has bolls opening, behind 100 percent for last year and 96 percent for the 5-year average. Three percent of the cotton crop has been harvested, behind 9 percent last year and 24 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated as 7 percent very poor, 13 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Ninety-eight percent of sunflowers have bracts yellow, behind 100 percent for both 2008 and the 5-year average. Ninety-two percent have reached maturity, behind 99 percent for last year and 98 percent for the 5-year average. Farmers have harvested 40 percent of the crop by week’s end, behind last year at 58 percent and 74 percent for the 5-year average. Sunflower condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Eighty-four percent of the fourth cutting of alfalfa has been completed, behind the previous year and the 5-year average both at 100 percent. Feed Supplies Report: Range and pasture condition was rated as 2 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated as 2 percent short, 90 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated as 2 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 91 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.
