ks-crop-weather United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office CROP WEATHER Kansas Agricultural Statistics Cooperating with the Kansas Department of Agriculture PO Box 3534 Topeka KS 66601-3534 (785)233-2230 www.nass.usda.gov/ks nass-ks@nass.usda.gov Released: December 20, 2009 Volume 09 No. 51 Agricultural Summary: It was a dry week across Kansas with only trace amounts of precipitation, though melting snow and ice during the day kept farmers from getting into fields. Farmers still averaged 3.4 days suitable for fieldwork across the State. Single digit low temperatures early in the week were followed by highs reaching into the mid 50’s by Sunday. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated as 2 percent very short, 5 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Field Crop Report: Farmers have very little of the row crop harvest left to complete. Many areas have finished, but there are still some acres that will be harvested between now and the end of 2009. Only two percent of the State’s corn crop is left to be harvested, which advanced from 96 percent complete to 98 percent. Ninety-eight percent of the sorghum crop has been harvested as of Sunday, leaving just 2 percent of the crop in the field. Eighty percent of the cotton has been harvested, which nearly catches cotton up to a normal year of harvesting. Four percent of the sunflowers are still in the field as harvest advanced to 96 percent complete. The condition of the winter wheat crop was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 63 percent good, and 10 percent excellent.
