United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office CROP WEATHER Kansas Agricultural Statistics Cooperating with the Kansas Department of Agriculture PO Box 3534 Topeka KS 66601-3534 (785)233-2230 www.nass.usda.gov/ks nass-ks@nass.usda.gov Released: November 23, 2009 Volume 09 No. 47 Agricultural Summary: Kansas experienced more snow and rain early last week, coupled with cool weather and a lack of sunshine. Snow accumulation was the heaviest across the northern tier of counties, where over 12 inches was reported in Washington County. The eastern third of the State received the most rain last week, with reports of more than an inch in most areas. Producers were limited to only 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork, ranging from nearly six days in the dryer Southwest District to less that a half of a day in the snowy, wet Northeast. Topsoil moisture supplies across Kansas were rated as 3 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus. Primary activities for the week included catching up on corn, sorghum, sunflower, and soybean harvest. Field Crop Report: Completion of harvest of row crops, especially in east and southeast Kansas, continued to be delayed by wet field conditions. Corn and soybeans were especially hard hit with corn advancing a modest 4 percent from last week, and soybeans only advancing slightly. Eighty-four percent of the State’s corn crop has been harvested, behind both last year at 92 percent and the 5-year average of 97 percent. Eighty-three percent of the soybean crop has been harvested, behind 2008 at 93 percent and the 5-year average of 96 percent. Seventy percent of the sorghum crop has been harvested, behind last year at 84 percent and the 5- year average of 92 percent. Only 14 percent of the cotton crop has been harvested, behind 33 percent last year and 47 percent for the 5-year average. The condition of the crop is rated as 10 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 34 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Four percent of the sunflowers have yet to reach maturity, when typically the entire crop is mature by now. Sixty-three percent of the crop has been harvested, behind last year at 84 percent and 91 percent for the 5-year average. Farmers still have 5 percent of the winter wheat yet to plant, while 88 percent of the crop has emerged, behind 94 percent last year and the 5-year average of 96 percent. The condition of the wheat crop was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Feed Supplies Report: Range and pasture condition was rated as 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated as 2 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated as 2 percent very short, 3 percent short, 89 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus.
