Kansas Dry Bean Production Down


Kansas dry bean production is estimated at 153,000 hundredweight (cwt.), 34 percent below the 2003 crop. Yield is estimated at 1,800 pounds per acre, 300 pounds below the 2,100 pounds produced per acre last year. Harvested acres, at 8,500, are down 2,500 acres from the 11,000 acres harvested in 2003.


The primary variety grown in Kansas is Pinto.


United States production of dry beans is estimated at 18.1 million cwt. for 2004, down 3 percent from the November forecast and 19 percent below 2003. Area for harvest is estimated at 1.23 million acres, 2 percent below the previous estimate and 9 percent below a year ago. The average yield, estimated at 1,479 pounds per acre, is 16 pounds lower than the November forecast and 191 pounds lower than a year ago.
