Kansas Wheat Production Down from June Forecast


Wheat production in Kansas for 2004 is forecast at 313.2 million bushels. The current forecast is down 11 percent from June 1 and 35 percent below last year's production. Harvested acres are expected to total 8.7 million, down 300,000 acres from June 1 and down 1.3 million acres from last year. Yield is expected to average 36 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from the June 1 forecast and 12 bushels below last year's yield of 48 bushels. As of July 4, wheat harvest was 83 percent complete, 1 point ahead of last year's progress of 82 percent complete and 2 points ahead of the 5- year average.

Oat production is forecast at 2.88 million bushels, down 37 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 48 bushels per acre, down 17 bushels from last year's yield of 65 bushels.

United States Winter Wheat Crop

Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.47 billion bushels. This is down 4 percent from June 1 and 14 percent below 2003. Acres for harvest as grain are forecast at 34.8 million. down 5 percent from 2003. The U.S. yield is forecast at 42.2 bushels per acre, down 1.4 bushels per acre from June 1.

Hard Red Winter Wheat, at 838 million bu shels, is down 5 percent from a month ago. White Winter production is up 1 percent this month and now totals 248 million bushels. Soft Red Winter, at 383 million bushels, is down 3 percent from the last forecast.

Kansas Crop Acreage

Kansas growers planted 18.95 million acres to the four major crops (wheat, sorghum, corn, and soybeans), down 3 percent from 2003. Wheat seeded last fall totaled 9.9 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but down 5 percent (500,000 acres) from last year. Acreage for harvest is expected to be 8.7 million acres, down 3 percent from the previous forecast and 13 percent (1.3 million acres) below a year ago.

Sorghum acreage planted and to be planted, at 3.1 million acres, is down 13 percent from last year. Kansas ranks first in the Nation in sorghum acreage. The acreage intended for harvest as grain, at 2.8 million acres, is down 3 percent from last year.

Corn planted acreage, at 3.25 million acres, is 12 percent above last year's planted acres. Farmers planted 54 percent of their corn acreage with varieties developed using biotechnology. Twenty-five percent of the acreage was planted with insect resistant only varieties containing bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and 24 percent of the acreage with herbicide resistant varieties developed using biotechnology. Stacked gene varieties, those containing both insect and herbicide resistance, were planted on 5 percent of the corn acreage. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain is 2.9 million acres, up 16 percent from last year.

Soybean plantings are expected to total 2.7 million acres, up 100,000 acres from a year ago. Producers planted 87 percent of the soybean acreage to herbicide resistant varieties in 2004. Expected acreage for harvest, at 2.55 million acres, is 3 percent above last year.

Oats planted in 2004, at 120,000 acres, is 14 percent below last year. Oats expected to be harvested for grain, at 60,000 acres, is down 10,000 acres from the previous year. Barley planted acreage, at 10,000 acres, increased 1,000 acres from last year. Expected acreage for harvest, at 8,000 acres, is unchanged from last year. All sunflowers planted, at 170,000 acres, are down 12 percent from last year. Oil type varieties planted are at 150,000 acres, while non-oil varieties are planted on 20,000 acres. All sunflowers harvested are expected to total 158,000 acres with oil type varieties projected at 140,000 harvested acres. Hay acreage to be harvested is expected to total 3.1 million acres, down 5 percent from last year. Of the total hay acreage, 900,000 acres are alfalfa hay, down 100,000 acres from last year. Acreage of dry beans planted, at 6,000 acres, is down 6,000 acres from last year. Harvested acreage is forecast at 5,500 acres. Cotton acreage is estimated at 120,000 acres in 2004, up 30,000 acres from last year.

United States Crop Acreage

Sorghum planted for all purposes is estimated at 8.10 million acres, down 14 percent from 2003. Sorghum harvested for grain is estimated at 6.92 million acres, down 11 percent from last year. Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 81.0 million acres, up 3 percent from both 2002 and 2003. Growers expect to harvest 73.4 million acres for grain, up 3 percent from 2003. Soybean growers planted or intend to plant 74.8 million acres, up 2 percent from last year. If realized, this will be the largest planted area on record and a rebound from the three year decline in acreage. Area to be harvested is estimated at 73.7 million acres, is also up 3 percent from 2003. Hay growers expect to harvest 61.6 million acres of all hay in 2004, 3 percent below 2003. Har-vested area of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures cut for hay is estimated at 22.2 million acres, down 6 percent from last year. All other hay acreage is estimated at 39.4 million acres, down 1 percent from last year. Sunflower planted area is estimated at 1.88 million acres, down 20 percent from last year, continuing a decreasing trend that began in 1998. Harvested area is estimated at 1.80 million acres, down 18 percent from 2003. Oil type varieties comprised 1.55 million acres this year, 22 percent below 2003. Non-oil type varieties were planted on 331,000 acres, down 4 percent from a year ago. Dry bean planted acreage is estimated at 1.42 million acres this year, up 1 percent from last year but 26 percent below two years ago.

Kansas Grain Stocks

Kansas wheat stocks in all positions totaled 76.7 million bushels on June 1 2004, 43 percent above last June. Wheat stored at off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 70.7 million bushels, which accounts for 92 percent of the total grain stocks.

Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 37.3 million bushels, 7 percent below last year's level. Off-farm stocks accounted for 33.4 million bushels and on-farm stocks for 3.9 million bushels.

Kansas corn stocks in all locations, at 76.4 million bushels, are 2 percent lower than last June. Off-farm stocks are 50.4 million bushels, which account for 66 percent of the total corn stocks. On-farm stocks, at 26.0 million bushels, are down 1.0 million bushels from last June.

Kansas soybeans in all locations totaled 12.6 million bushels, a 5 percent decrease from June 2003. Off-farm stocks, at 10.7 million bushels, are also up 9 percent from last year and accounted for 85 percent of the total soybean stocks. On-farm stocks totaled 1.9 million bushels, down 1.6 million bushels from the previous year.

Off-farm oat stocks are 519,000 bushels, up 49 percent from last June.

Off-farm barley stocks, at 26,000 bushels, are double the 13,000 bushels from a year ago.

United States Grain Stocks

All wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2004 totaled 546 million bushels, up 11 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 132 million bushels, down slightly from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 414 million bushels, are up 15 percent

from a year ago. The March-May 2004 indicated disappearance is 475 million bushels, up 14 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 80.2 million bushels, 2 percent below last year's level. On-farm stocks, at 7.65 million bushels, are down 31 percent from June 1 last year. Off-farm stocks, at 72.5 million bushels, are up 3 percent from a year earlier. The March-May 2004 indicated disappearance from all positions is 78.5 million bushels, down from 81.0 million bushels during the same period a year ago.

Corn stocks in all positions totaled 2.97 billion bushels, down slightly from June 1, 2003. Of the total stocks, 1.54 billion bushels are stored on-farms, down 5 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 1.43 billion bushels, are up 5 percent from the previous year. The March-May 2004 indicated disappearance is 2.30 billion bushels, compared with 2.15 billion bushels during the same period last year.

Soybeans in all positions total 410 million bushels, down 32 percent from June 2003. This is lowest June 1 stocks level since 1977. On-farm stocks totaled 110 million bushels, down 60 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 300 million bushels, are down 9 percent from the previous year. The March-May 2004 indicated disappearance is 496 million bushels, down 17 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Oat stocks in all positions totaled 64.7 million bushels, 30 percent above June 1, 2003. Of the total stocks on hand, 27.5 million bushels are stored on farms, 33 percent more than a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 37.2 million bushels, up 27 percent from a year earlier. Indicated dis-appearance during March-May 2004 totaled 30.3 million bushels, down 8 percent from the same period a year ago.

Barley stocks in all positions totaled 120 million bushels, up 74 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 28.3 million bushels, 91 percent above a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 92.0 million bushels, are 69 percent above June 2003. The March-May 2004 indicated disappearance is 32.6 million bushels, 40 percent below the same period a year earlier.
