SMALL GRAINS SUMMARY
Kansas wheat production for 2004 is estimated at 314.5 million bushels, up slightly from the August forecast but down 34 percent from 2003. Yield is estimated at 37.0 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the August forecast but 11 bushels below the 2003 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 8.5 million acres, down 200,000 acres from the previous forecast and down 1.5 million from the 2003 harvest. A total of 10.0 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2004, up 100,000 acres from the August forecast but down 500,000 acres from the previous year.
Oat production is 1.72 million bushels in 2004, down 62 percent from 2003. Final yield is estimated at 43.0 bushels per acre, 22 bushels lower than the 2003 yield. Grain was harvested from 40,000 of the 120,000 acres planted.
Barley production totaled 336,000 bushels for 2004, down 26 percent from the 2003 crop. Yields averaged 28.0 bushels per acre, 29 bushels below last year. Grain was harvested from 12,000 of the 15,000 acres planted.
GRAIN STOCKS
Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 273.4 million bushels, 27 percent less than last year's total. Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 239.4 million bushels, a decrease of 28 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 88 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat in farm storage totaled 34.0 million bushels, down 21 percent from last September.
Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 13.9 million bushels, down from 23.7 million bushels last year. Off-farm holdings of 12.1 million bushels were down from 21.0 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 87 percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm stocks of 1.8 million bushels were down 900,000 bushels from a year ago.
Corn stocks in all locations, at 27.0 million bushels, were down 35 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 16.5 million bushels were down from 25.5 million bushels last year and accounted for 61 percent of total corn stocks. On-farm stocks of 10.5 million bushels were 34 percent below last September.
Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 2.7 million bushels, down 1.0 million bushels from last year. Off-farm locations held 2.4 million bushels, down 132,000 bushels from last year, and accounted for 89 percent of total soybean stocks. On-farm stocks of 300,000 bushels are 900,000 bushels below last year.
Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 729,000 bushels, down 46 percent from September 2003.
Barley stored at off-farm locations totaled 51,000 bushels, compared with 73,000 a year earlier.
