Production of Major Row Crops Down

 

The Kansas wheat crop is estimated at 374.4 million bushels, unchanged from the July 1 forecast but 19 percent larger than the 2004 crop. Yield is estimated at 39 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from a year ago. Acreage harvested for grain, at 9.6 million acres, is unchanged from July 1 but up 1.1 million acres from last year.

 

Corn production is forecast at 387.5 million bushels, down 10 percent from the previous year’s record production of 432.0 million bushels. Planted acreage is 3.45 million acres, 350,000 acres above a year ago. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain is 3.10 million acres, up 220,000 acres from last year. Corn yields are expected to average 125 bushels per acre, 25 bushels below the 150 bushels per acre in 2004.

 

Kansas sorghum grain production is forecast at 182.9 million bushels, down 17 percent from the 220.4 million bushels in 2004. Yields are expected to average 69 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from last year's yield. Planted acreage is 2.9 million acres, down 300,000 acres from 2004. Sorghum acreage to be harvested for grain, at 2.650 million acres, is down 250,000 acres from 2004.

 

Soybean production is forecast at 89.6 million bushels, down 19 percent from last year’s production of 111.11 million bushels. Yield is forecast at 32 bushels per acre, down 9 bushels from last year's yield. Harvested acreage is expected to be 2.80 million acres, up 90,000 acres from the acreage harvested last year. Planted acres are estimated at 2.9 million, up 100,000 from 2004.

 

Cotton production is projected to reach 80,000 bales in 2005. Yield is forecast at a record 549 pounds of lint per acre. Planted acreage is 80,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from last year. Harvested acreage is forecast at 70,000, down 10,000 acres from last year.

U.S. Crop Production

 

UNITED STATES: All wheat production is placed at 2.17 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the July forecast but up slightly from 2004. Based on August 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 43.0 bushels per acre, down 0.8 bushel from last month and 0.2 bushel below last year. Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.52 billion bushels. This is down slightly from last month but 1 percent above 2004. The U.S. yield is forecast at 44.4 bushels per acre, down 0.1 bushel from last month. Acres for harvest as grain are forecast at 34.3 million, unchanged from last month but down 1 percent from 2004.

 

The 2005 sorghum grain production forecast is 380 million bushels, down 16 percent from 2004. Based on August 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 63.1 bushels per acre, down 6.7 bushels from 2004. Kansas continues to lead the Nation in sorghum production. Texas, the second leading sorghum producer, expects a yield of 56.0 bushels per acre, down 6.0 bushels from 2004. Acreage expected to be harvested for in the U.S. in 2005, 6.03 million acres, unchanged from the June estimate but 7 percent below 2004.

 

Corn production is forecast at 10.3 billion bushels, down 12 percent from last year but 3 percent above 2003. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 139.2 bushels per acre, down 21.2 bushels from the record high last year. Across the U.S., yields are forecast lower than last year in 29 of the 33 published corn states. The largest decreases occurred in Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 74.4 million acres, unchanged from June but up 1 percent from 2004.

 

Soybean production is forecast at 2.79 billion bushels, down 11 percent from 2004 but up 14 percent from 2003. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 38.7 bushels per acre, down 3.8 bushels from the record high U.S. yield set last year. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 72.2 million acres, has declined slightly from June and is down 2 percent from 2004.
