Corn Production Forecast Raised


Kansas corn production is expected to total 429.0 million bushels, 6 percent above the previous forecast but 1 percent below last year’s crop. Acreage harvested for grain, at 3.30 million acres, is up 200,000 acres from the previous forecast and up 15 percent from 2004. Corn yields are expected to average 130 bushels per acre, the same as September 1 but 20 bushels below the previous year.


Sorghum grain production is forecast at 180.0 million bushels, down 18 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 72 bushels per acre, 2 bushels below last month and 4 bushels below last year’s yield. Acreage for harvest as grain is 2.50 million acres, down 150,000 acres from September 1 and down 400,000 acres from 2004.


Soybean production in Kansas is expected to total 100.8 million bushels, unchanged from September 1 but 9 percent below last year’s crop. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 2.80 million acres, the same as September 1 but up 3 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 36 bushels per acre, unchanged from September 1 but 5 bushels below 2004.


Kansas sunflower production is forecast at 454.5 million pounds, up 201 percent from last year. Harvested acreage, at 277,000, is up 119,000 acres from last year. The yield is expected to average 1,641 pounds per acre, up 208 pounds from last year. If realized, this would be a record high.


All hay production is estimated to total 7.21 million tons, down 9 percent from 2004. Kansas acreage harvested is 3.1 million acres, down 250,000 acres from last year.


Kansas wheat production for 2005 is estimated at 380.0 million bushels, up 21 percent from 2004. Yield is estimated at 40.0 bushels per acre, 3 bushels above the 2004 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 9.5 million acres, up 1.0 million from the 2004 harvest. A total of 10.0 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2005, the same as the previous year.


Estimates of Kansas corn and soybean production by district are shown on the following page. Wheat county and district data are not included in this report but will be released in late 2005.

U.S. Crop Production


Corn grain production is forecast at 10.9 billion bushels, up 2 percent from last month but 8 percent below 2004. If realized, this would be the second largest crop on record. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 146.1 bushels per acre, up 2.9 bushels from September but 14.3 bushels below last year. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 74.3 million acres, up 15,000 acres from September and 1 percent higher than 2004.


Sorghum grain production is forecast at 375 million bushels, down 6 percent from September and down 18 percent from 2004. Area harvested and to be harvested, at 5.69 million acres, is down 6 percent from last month and 13 percent below 2004. The U.S. yield is forecast at 66.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from September but down 3.8 bushels from last year.


Soybean production is forecast at 2.97 billion bushels, up 4 percent from the September forecast but 5 percent below 2004. Based on conditions as of October 1, yield is expected to average 41.6 bushels per acre, up 2.0 bushels from September but 0.6 bushel below last year’s record high yield. Area planted now is estimated at 72.2 million acres, down 903,000 acres from the August estimate. Area for harvest is forecast at 71.3 million acres, down 914,000 from September.

Kansas Grain Stocks


Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 309.1 million bushels, 13 percent higher than last year's total. Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 268.1 million bushels, an increase of 12 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 87 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat in farm storage totaled 41.0 million bushels, up 21 percent from last September.


Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 29.5 million bushels, up from 13.9 million bushels last year. Off-farm holdings of 27.0 million bushels were up from 12.1 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 92 percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm stocks of 2.5 million bushels were up 700,000 bushels from a year ago.


Corn stocks in all locations, at 73.8 million bushels, were up 273 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 58.8 million bushels were up from 16.5 million bushels last year and accounted for 80 percent of total corn stocks. On-farm stocks of 15.0 million bushels were 43 percent above last September.


Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 6.0 million bushels, up 3.4 million bushels from last year. Off-farm locations held 4.4 million bushels, up 2.1 million bushels from last year, and accounted for 73 percent of total soybean stocks. On-farm stocks of 1.6 million bushels are 1.3 million bushels above last year.


Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 799,000 bushels, up 9 percent from September 2004.


Barley stored at off-farm locations totaled 95,000 bushels, compared with 51,000 a year earlier.
