SMALL GRAINS SUMMARY


Kansas wheat production for 2005 is estimated at 380.0 million bushels, up 1 percent from the August forecast and 21 percent above 2004. Yield is estimated at 40.0 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the August forecast and 3 bushels above 2004. Acres harvested for grain totaled 9.5 million acres, down 100,000 acres from the previous forecast but 1.0 million above 2004. A total of 10.0 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2005, down 100,000 acres from the August forecast but the same as the previous year.

 

Oat production is 2.36 million bushels in 2005, up 37 percent from 2004. Final yield is estimated at 59.0 bushels per acre, 16 bushels higher than last year. Grain was harvested from 40,000 of the 100,000 acres planted.

 

Barley production totaled 588,000 bushels for 2005, up 75 percent from the 2004 crop. Yields averaged 42.0 bushels per acre, 14 bushels above last year. Grain was harvested from 14,000 of the 19,000 acres planted.

 

 

GRAIN STOCKS

 

Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 309.1 million bushels, 13 percent higher than last year's total. Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 268.1 million bushels, an increase of 12 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 87 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat in farm storage totaled 41.0 million bushels, up 21 percent from last September.

 

Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 29.5 million bushels, up from 13.9 million bushels last year. Off-farm holdings of 27.0 million bushels were up from 12.1 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 92 percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm stocks of 2.5 million bushels were up 700,000 bushels from a year ago.

 

Corn stocks in all locations, at 73.8 million bushels, were up 273 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 58.8 million bushels were up from 16.5 million bushels last year and accounted for 80 percent of total corn stocks. On-farm stocks of 15.0 million bushels were 43 percent above last September.

 

Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 6.0 million bushels, up 3.4 million bushels from last year. Off-farm locations held 4.4 million bushels, up 2.1 million bushels from last year, and accounted for 73 percent of total soybean stocks. On-farm stocks of 1.6 million bushels are 1.3 million bushels above last year.

 

Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 799,000 bushels, up 9 percent from September 2004.

 

Barley stored at off-farm locations totaled 95,000 bushels, compared with 51,000 a year earlier.
