Production of Major Row Crops Down
The Kansas wheat crop is estimated at 300.8 million bushels, unchanged from the July 1 forecast but 21 percent less than the 2005 crop. Yield is estimated at 32 bushels per acre, down 8 bushels from a year ago. Acreage harvested for grain, at 9.4 million acres, is unchanged from July 1 but down 100,000 acres from last year.
Corn production is forecast at 393.8 million bushels, down 15 percent from the previous year’s record production of 465.8 million bushels. Planted acreage is 3.40 million acres, 250,000 acres less than a year ago. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain is 3.15 million acres, down 300,000 acres from last year. Corn yields are expected to average 125 bushels per acre, 10 bushels below the 135 bushels per acre in 2005.
Kansas sorghum grain production is forecast at 131.1 million bushels, down 33 percent from 195.0 million bushels in 2005. Yields are expected to average 57 bushels per acre, down 18 bushels from last year's yield. Planted acreage is 2.50 million acres, down 250,000 acres from 2005. Sorghum acreage to be harvested for grain, at 2.30 million acres, is down 300,000 acres from 2005.
Soybean production is forecast at 93.0 million bushels, down 12 percent from last year’s production of 105.5 million bushels. Yield is forecast at 31 bushels per acre, down 6 bushels from last year's yield. Harvested acreage is expected to be 3.00 million acres, up 150,000 acres from the acreage harvested last year. Planted acres are estimated at 3.10 million, up 200,000 from 2005. If realized, planted and harvested acreage will be new record highs.
Cotton production is projected to reach 115,000 bales in 2006. Yield is forecast at 581 pounds of lint per acre. Planted acreage is 100,000 acres, up 26,000 acres from last year. Harvested acreage is forecast at 95,000, up 29,000 acres from last year.

U.S. Crop Production Forecast
UNITED STATES: All wheat production is placed at 1.80 billion bushels, down slightly from the July forecast and down 14 percent from 2005. Based on August 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 38.3 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but 3.7 bushels below last year. Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.28 billion bushels. This is up slightly from last month but 14 percent below 2005. The U.S. yield is forecast at 41.2 bushels per acre, up 0.1 bushel from July 1. Acres for harvest as grain are forecast at 31.1 million, unchanged from last month but down 8 percent from 2005.
The 2006 sorghum grain production forecast is 296 million bushels, down 25 percent from 2005. If realized, this would be the lowest production since 1956. Based on August 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 55.8 bushels per acre, down 12.9 bushels from 2005. Kansas, the largest producing state, expects a yield of 57.0 bushels, 18.0 bushels below 2005. The yield forecast for Texas is 48.0 bushels per acre, down 12.0 bushels from 2005. Acreage expected to be harvested for in the U.S. in 2006, 5.32 million acres, unchanged from the June estimate but 7 percent below 2005.
Corn production is forecast at 11.0 billion bushels, down 1 percent from last year and 7 percent below 2004. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 152.2 bushels per acre, up 4.3 bushels from last year. If realized, yields would be the second largest and production would be the third largest on record. The largest yield increase is in Illinois, where farmers expect to average 172 bushels per acre, 29 bushels above last year’s drought-reduced yield. The largest yield decreases are expected in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and North Dakota. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 72.1 million acres, unchanged from June but down 4 percent from 2005.
Soybean production is forecast at 2.93 billion bushels, down 5 percent from 2005 and down 6 percent from 2004. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 39.6 bushels per acre, down 3.7 bushels from the record high U.S. yield set last year. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 73.9 million acres, unchanged from June but up 4 percent from 2005. Planted area and harvested area, if realized, are both the second largest on record.
