U.S. Crop Production
UNITED STATES: Corn production is forecast at 11.1 billion bushels, up 1 percent from last month and fractionally above 2005. Based on September 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 154.7 bushels per acre, up 2.5 bushels per acre from August and 6.8 bushels from last year. If realized, yield and production would be the second largest on record, behind 2004. Acreage for harvest as grain is estimated at 71.8 million acres, down 250,000 acres from August and down 4 percent from 2005.
Production of sorghum grain is forecast at 305 million bushels, up 3 percent from August but down 23 percent from 2005. If realized, this would be the lowest production since 1956. Area harvested and to be harvested for grain, at 5.32 million acres, is unchanged from August but 7 percent lower than the 2005 harvested grain acreage. The forecast U.S. yield, at 57.3 bushels per acre, is up 1.5 bushels from August but down 11.4 bushels from 2005.
Soybean production is forecast at 3.09 billion bushels, up 6 percent from August 1 and up slightly from the 2005 crop. If realized, this would be the second highest production on record. Based on September 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 41.8 bushels per acre, up 2.2 bushels from August but down 1.5 bushels from last year’s record high yield. Acreage for harvest is forecast at 73.9 million acres, unchanged from August 1 but up 4 percent from 2005.
All wheat production is placed at 1.80 billion bushels, unchanged from the August forecast but 14 percent below 2005. The U.S. yield is forecast at 38.3 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month.

Kansas Ranked 7th in Agricultural Exports
Kansas ranked seventh among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 2005, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service. Exports from five of the top ten states increased. The total value of Kansas exports, at $2.8 billion, is down 16 percent from the previous fiscal year. Most of the value decrease came from the Wheat & Products category. Kansas accounted for 4.4 percent of the $62.4 billion U.S. agricultural exports in FY 2005.
Kansas ranked in first place among States for Wheat & Products and Feeds & Fodders exports. The numbers show Kansas ranking second in the Nation for Hides & Skins and Animal Fats. Other top ten rankings for Kansas were Sunflower Seed & Oil (third place with $16.1 million), Seed (fourth place with $51.7 million), Live Animals & Meat (sixth place with $283.5 million), Feed Grains & Products (sixth place with $496.7 million), and Soybeans & Products (tenth place with $302.1 million). Wheat & Products accounted for 27 percent of the State total and 13 percent of the National Wheat & Products exports. Hides & Skins comprised 12 percent of the total Kansas exports and 20 percent of all U.S. Hides & Skins exports. Feed Grains & Products tallied 18 percent and 7 percent of the State and National exports, respectively.
The United States exported $62.4 billion of agricultural commodities in FY 2005, virtually unchanged from 2004. California continued to lead the Nation in agricultural exports at $10.2 billion. Iowa ranked second, followed by Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Washington, North Dakota, and Indiana. Agricultural export estimates by State are based on the assumption that if a State contributes a certain percentage of U.S. production, it contributes a similar percentage of export revenues. When appropriate, however, supplemental data (Customs district data, domestic use data, and the Census of Agriculture data, for example) were used to adjust the export share.
