Kansas Ranked 7th in Agricultural Exports

Kansas ranked seventh among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 2005, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service. Exports from five of the top ten states increased. The total value of Kansas exports, at $2.8 billion, is down 16 percent from the previous fiscal year. Most of the value decrease came from the Wheat & Products category. Kansas accounted for 4.4 percent of the $62.4 billion U.S. agricultural exports in FY 2005.

Kansas ranked in first place among States for Wheat & Products and Feeds & Fodders exports. The numbers show Kansas ranking second in the Nation for Hides & Skins and Animal Fats. Other top ten rankings for Kansas were Sunflower Seed & Oil (third place with $16.1 million), Seed (fourth place with $51.7 million), Live Animals & Meat (sixth place with $283.5 million), Feed Grains & Products (sixth place with $496.7 million), and Soybeans & Products (tenth place with $302.1 million). Wheat & Products accounted for 27 percent of the State total and 13 percent of the National Wheat & Products exports. Hides & Skins comprised 12 percent of the total Kansas exports and 20 percent of all U.S. Hides & Skins exports. Feed Grains & Products tallied 18 percent and 7 percent of the State and National exports, respectively.

The United States exported $62.4 billion of agricultural commodities in FY 2005, virtually unchanged from 2004. California continued to lead the Nation in agricultural exports at $10.2 billion. Iowa ranked second, followed by Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Washington, North Dakota, and Indiana. Agricultural export estimates by State are based on the assumption that if a State contributes a certain percentage of U.S. production, it contributes a similar percentage of export revenues. When appropriate, however, supplemental data (Customs district data, domestic use data, and the Census of Agriculture data, for example) were used to adjust the export share.
