SPECIAL PRESS RELEASE
Released: August 5, 2004
PROTEIN UP BUT TEST WEIGHT DOWN FROM LAST YEAR
Preliminary data from 6,176 carlot samples from 57 counties show an average test weight of 59.7 pounds per bushel, according to Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service and the Kansas Grain Inspection Service Inc. For comparison purposes, last year’s crop averaged 60.7 pounds, while the 10-year average from 1993-2002 is 60.2 pounds per bushel.
Protein is averaging 12.7 percent, compared with 11.7 percent for 2003 and 12.1 percent for the 10-year average. Moisture content is averaging 11.7 percent, compared with 11.5 percent for last year and 11.7 percent for the 10-year average.
Samples of wheat grading No. 1, at 50 percent, are down 23 points from the 73 percent of last year, while 38 percent graded No. 2, compared to 24 percent in 2003. Twelve percent graded No. 3 or below. Average dockage for all samples is 0.5 percent, down 0.1 from 2003. Of all samples graded, 99 percent had from 0.1 to 0.9 percent dockage, compared to 93 percent last year.
There have been 4,613 samples voluntarily submitted for inspection in this crop year. Test weight for these samples averaged 58.2 pounds, 13.3 percent protein, and 11.7 percent moisture. These submitted samples graded No. 1, 37 percent; No. 2, 46 percent; No. 3, 10 percent; and 7 percent as No. 4 or lower. Last year, 17,864 samples were voluntarily submitted from June 23, 2003 to April 30, 2004 and had an average test weight of 60.7 pounds, 11.7 percent protein, and 11.5 percent moisture. Grades were No. 1, 69 percent; No. 2, 25 percent; No. 3, 5 percent; and No. 4, 1 percent.
This is the sixth in a series of wheat quality releases to be made during the 2004 wheat harvest. Test weight, protein content, grade and defect determinations are made by the Kansas Grain Inspection Service Inc. The data are summarized by Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service; collection and publication services are funded by the Kansas Wheat Commission.
