SPECIAL PRESS RELEASE
Released: January 26, 2005
Protein Up But Test Weight Down From a Year Ago
This special Wheat Quality release represents wheat shipments that occurred from August 30th through December 31, 2004 (Fall 2004). The basic quality information is compiled by summarizing data from inspection certificates for railroad car samples of Kansas wheat moving from first point of sale. In addition, truckloads converted to carlot equivalents were included. Test weight, protein, grade, and defect determinations are made by the Kansas Grain Inspection Service Inc. The data are summarized by Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, and collection and publication are funded by the Kansas Wheat Commission.
The average test weight from 8,403 carlot samples tested during Fall 2004 was 59.8 pounds per bushel. For comparison purposes, this is down from the 60.9 pounds per bushel test weight during the Fall 2003 season. Fall 2004 protein averaged 13.2 percent, compared to 11.7 percent for Fall 2003 while moisture content averaged 11.4 percent for the 2004 period, compared to 11.3 percent for 2003.
Samples of wheat grading No. 1, at 37 percent, are below the Fall 2003 average of 72 percent. Forty-three percent graded No. 2, compared with 24 percent during Fall 2003. The remaining 20 percent of the samples graded as No. 3 or lower, compared with 4 percent last year. Higher incidences of damaged kernels and below average test weights, primarily in Western Kansas, led to lower average grades. Damaged kernels averaged 0.2 percent, Statewide, during 1993-2002, 0.3 percent for Fall 2003, and 1.0 percent for Fall 2004. The most common cause of damaged kernels during 2004 was sprouting in the head.
A final report will be published in May covering the 2004 wheat crop shipped from January 1, 2005 through April 30, 2005.
