SPECIAL PRESS RELEASE

Released: August 11, 2005

TEST WEIGHT UP AND PROTEIN ABOVE AVERAGE

Preliminary data from 11,385 carlot samples from 58 counties show an average test weight of 61.0 pounds per bushel, according to Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service and the Kansas Grain Inspection Service Inc. For comparison purposes, last year’s crop averaged 59.7 pounds, while the 10-year average from 1994-2003 is 60.3 pounds per bushel.

Protein is averaging 12.3 percent, compared with 12.8 percent for 2004 and 12.1 percent for the 10-year average. Moisture content is averaging 11.2 percent, compared with 11.6 percent for both last year and the 10-year average.

Samples of wheat grading No. 1, at 82 percent, are up 31 points from the 51 percent of last year, while 17 percent graded No. 2, compared to 36 percent in 2004. Only 1 percent graded No. 3 or below. Wheat samples averaged 0.3 percent damaged kernels, compared with 0.7 for 2004 and 0.2 for the 10-year average. Samples tested had 0.1 percent foreign material on average, the same as 2004 and the 10-year average. Shrunken & broken kernels averaged 1.2 percent, compared with 1.3 for 2004 and 1.6 for the 10-year average. Total defects averaged 1.6 percent, compared with 2.1 for 2004 and 2.0 for the 10-year average. Average dockage for all samples is 0.5 percent, the same as last year.

There have been 5,384 samples voluntarily submitted for inspection in this crop year. Test weight for these samples averaged 60.7 pounds, 12.4 percent protein, and 11.3 percent moisture. These submitted samples graded No. 1, 53 percent; No. 2, 43 percent; and No. 3, 4 percent. Last year, 12,862 samples were voluntarily submitted from June 16, 2004 to April 30, 2005 and had an average test weight of 58.7 pounds, 13.2 percent protein, and 11.6 percent moisture. Grades were No. 1, 46 percent; No. 2, 43 percent; No. 3, 7 percent; No. 4, 3 percent and No. 5, 1 percent.

This is the last in a series of wheat quality releases to be made during the 2005 wheat harvest. Test weight, protein content, grade and defect determinations are made by the Kansas Grain Inspection Service Inc. The data are summarized by Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service; collection and publication services are funded by the Kansas Wheat Commission.
