SPECIAL PRESS RELEASE

Released: May 18, 2006

This special Wheat Quality release represents wheat shipments from January 1, 2006 through April 30, 2006. It is a summary of wheat quality data covering wheat shipments in commercial channels and does not include newly harvested wheat. The basic quality information is compiled by summarizing data from inspection certificates for railroad car samples of Kansas wheat moving from first point of sale. Test weight, protein, grade, and defect determinations are made by the Kansas Grain Inspection Service Inc. The data are summarized by Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, and collection and publication are funded by the Kansas Wheat Office.

The average test weight from 15,061 carlot samples tested during January 1 through April 30, 2006 was 60.9 pounds per bushel. For comparison purposes, this is down from the 61.0 pounds per bushel test weight during the harvest season from June 19 thru August 6, 2005. For the same time period, protein averaged 12.3 percent, the same percent as at harvest and moisture content averaged 10.8 percent, compared to 11.2 percent at harvest.

Samples of wheat grading No. 1, at 59 percent, are down from the 2005 harvest average of 82 percent. Thirty-seven percent graded No. 2, compared with 17 percent during harvest.

This release carries forward the Wheat Quality data gathered during the 2005 harvest and the following fall period. The average test weight for the total season was 61.0 pounds per bushel, compared to 59.8 pounds per bushel for last year. For the same period, protein averaged 12.3 percent, down from last year’s 13.0 percent. Moisture content averaged 11.0 percent, down from 11.5 percent last year.
