The All Crops Index in August, at 197 percent of the 1990-92 base, was up 15 points from July and up 53 points from 2006. The Meat Animals Index, at 122 percent of the 1990-92 base, was up 1 point from July and 4 points above last year. More detailed information regarding price indexes is shown in the first table on the back of this release. Wheat prices in mid-August, at $6.04 per bushel, were up 83 cents from July and up $1.64 from last August. Corn prices in mid-August, at $3.40 per bushel, were down 23 cents from July but $1.17 above last August. Farmers received an average of $5.40 per cwt. for sorghum grain in mid- August, down 66 cents from July but $1.52 above last August. Soybean prices, at $7.61 per bushel in mid-August, were down 24 cents from July but $2.27 above last August. All hay prices averaged $99.00 per ton in mid-August, unchanged from July but $3.00 higher than last year. Alfalfa hay averaged $107.00 per ton, up $5.00 from July but unchanged from last August. Other hay, at $80.00 per ton, was down $8.00 from July but $9.00 above last August. All beef cattle were bringing an average of $93.80 per cwt. in mid-August, up $1.00 from July and $3.30 above the price from last August. Cow prices, at $54.50 per cwt., were up $1.10 from July and $7.50 above the price from last August. Steers and heifers averaged $94.20 per cwt., up $1.00 from July and $3.30 above August 2006. Calf prices in mid-August were $132.00 per cwt., up $3.00 from July but down $8.00 from August 2006. The all hog price of $47.00 per cwt. for mid-August was up 10 cents from July but down 70 cents from last August. Sow prices averaged $35.60, down $1.20 from July and 90 cents lower than August 2006. Barrow and gilt prices averaged $48.70 per cwt. in mid-August, up 30 cents from July but 70 cents below last August. UNITED STATES: The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in August was 139 percent of the 1990-92 base, down 2 points from July but 20 points above August 2006. The August All Crops Index was 139, down 2 points from July but 14 points above August 2006. The August Livestock and Products Index, at 139, was down 1 point from last month but up 25 points from August 2006.
