The All Crops Index in August, at 262 percent of the 1990-92 base, is down 7 points from July but up 70 points from 2007. The Meat Animals Index, at 130 percent of the 1990-92 base, is up 1 point from July and 5 points above last year. More detailed information regarding price indexes is shown in the first table on the back of this release. Wheat prices in mid-August, at $7.83 per bushel, is up 17 cents from July and up $1.95 from last August. Corn prices in mid-August, at $5.12 per bushel, is down 86 cents from July but $1.86 above last August. Farmers received an average of $8.01 per cwt. for sorghum grain in mid- August, down $2.19 from July but $2.41 above last August. Soybean prices, at $12.10 per bushel in mid-August, is down $2.40 from July but $4.22 above last August. All hay prices averaged $120.00 per ton in mid-August, unchanged from July but $27.00 higher than last year. Alfalfa hay averaged $133.00 per ton, up $3.00 from July and $26.00 higher than last August. Other hay, at $89.00 per ton, is down $6.00 from July but $9.00 above last August. All beef cattle is bringing an average of $99.60 per cwt. in mid-August, up 50 cents from July and $3.80 above the price from last August. Cow prices, at $58.30 per cwt., is unchanged from July but $4.00 above the price from last August. Steers and heifers averaged $100.00 per cwt., up 50 cents from July and $3.80 above August 2007. Calf prices in mid-August is $126.00 per cwt., unchanged from July but down $6.00 from August 2007. The all hog price of $56.10 per cwt. for mid-August is up $7.30 from July and up $10.30 from last August. Sow prices averaged $36.40, up $13.40 from July and 70 cents higher than August 2007. Barrow and gilt prices averaged $59.10 per cwt. in mid-August, up $6.50 from July and $11.80 above last August. Grain and oilseed prices by district are shown in the second table on the back of this release. UNITED STATES: The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in August is 155 percent of the 1990-92 base, down 4 points from July but 16 points above August 2007. The August All Crops Index is 175, down 7 points from July but 33 points above August 2007. The August Livestock and Products Index, at 137, is down 1 point from last month but unchanged from August 2007.
