The All Crops Index in January, at 168 percent of the 1990-92 base, is up 4 points from December but down 50 points from 2008. The Meat Animals Index, at 109 percent of the 1990-92 base, is up 1 point from December but 7 points below last year. More detailed information regarding price indexes is shown in the first table on the back of this release. Wheat prices in mid-January, at $5.36 per bushel, is up 16 cents from December but $2.69 below last January. Corn prices in mid-January, at $3.65 per bushel, is down 7 cents from December and 72 cents below last January. Farmers received an average of $5.11 per cwt. for sorghum grain in mid- January, down 2 cents from December and $2.44 below last January. Soybean prices, at $9.32 per bushel in mid-January, is up 95 cents from December but $1.28 below last January. All hay prices averaged $114.00 per ton in mid-January, down $1.00 from December but $17.00 higher than last year. Alfalfa hay averaged $132.00 per ton, up $6.00 from December and $21.00 higher than last January. Other hay, at $82.00 per ton, is unchanged from December but $4.00 above last January. All beef cattle were bringing an average of $84.20 per cwt. in mid-January, unchanged from December but $6.60 below the price last January. Cow prices, at $43.00 per cwt., is up $2.00 from December but $4.30 below the price last January. Steers and heifers averaged $85.90 per cwt., up 40 cents from December but $6.70 below January 2008. Calf prices in mid-January is $112.00 per cwt., up $6.00 from December but down $5.00 from January 2008. The all hog price of $38.20 per cwt. for mid-January is up 70 cents from December and up $8.40 from last January. Sow prices averaged $46.40, up 50 cents from December and $27.20 higher than January 2008. Barrow and gilt prices averaged $37.00 per cwt. in mid-January, up 70 cents December and $5.10 above last January. Grain and oilseed prices by district are shown in the second table on the back of this release. UNITED STATES: The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in January is 137 percent of the 1990-92 base, up 2 points from December but 7 points below January 2008. The January All Crops Index is 157, up 8 points from December but 1 point below January 2008. The January Livestock and Products Index, at 115, is down 4 points from last month and down 14 points from January 2008.
