The All Crops Index in May, at 178 percent of the 1990-92 base, is down 5 points from April and down 69 points from 2008. The Meat Animals Index, at 112 percent of the 1990-92 base, is up 3 points from April but 11 points below last year. More detailed information regarding price indexes is shown in the first table on the back of this release. Wheat prices in mid-May, at $5.85 per bushel, are up 49 cents from April but down $2.30 from last May. Corn prices in mid-May, at $3.93 per bushel, are up 23 cents from April but $1.73 below last May. Farmers received an average of $6.09 per cwt. for sorghum grain in mid-May, up 50 cents from April but $3.33 below last May. Soybean prices, at $10.90 per bushel in mid-May, are up $1.27 from April but $1.70 below last May. All hay prices averaged $113.00 per ton in mid-May, down $2.00 from April but $12.00 higher than last year. Alfalfa hay averaged $120.00 per ton, up $3.00 from April and $15.00 higher than last May. Other hay, at $80.00 per ton, is up $6.00 from April but unchanged from last May. All beef cattle are bringing an average of $84.40 per cwt. in mid-May, down $1.30 from April and $9.70 below the price from last May. Cow prices, at $51.90 per cwt., is up $3.70 from April but $3.70 below the price from last May. Steers and heifers averaged $85.80 per cwt., down $1.50 from April and $9.90 below May 2008. Calf prices in mid-May is $119.00 per cwt., unchanged from April but down $2.00 from May 2008. The all hog price of $39.80 per cwt. for mid-May are up $1.00 from April but down $8.60 from last May. Sow prices averaged $44.80, up $1.00 from April and $18.00 higher than May 2008. Barrow and gilt prices averaged $39.00 per cwt. in mid-May, up $1.00 from April but $12.60 below last May. Grain and oilseed prices by district are shown in the second table on the back of this release. UNITED STATES: The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in May is 131 percent of the 1990-92 base, up 2 points from April but 21 points below May 2008. The May All Crops Index is 153, up 2 points from April but 20 points below May 2008. The May Livestock and Products Index, at 112, is unchanged from last month but down 22 points from May 2008.
