The All Crops Index in October, at 157 percent of the 1990-92 base, is up 12 points from September but down 39 points from 2008. The Meat Animals Index, at 107 percent of the 1990-92 base, is down 2 points from September and 12 points below last year. More detailed information regarding price indexes is shown in the first table on the back of this release. Wheat prices in mid-October, at $4.28 per bushel, are up 25 cents from September but $1.64 below last October. Corn prices in mid-October, at $3.46 per bushel, are up 28 cents from September but $1.47 below last October. Farmers received an average of $5.35 per cwt. for grain sorghum in mid- October, up 61 cents from September but 80 cents below last October. Soybean prices, at $9.35 per bushel in mid-October, are down 11 cents from September and 34 cents below last October. All hay prices averaged $99 per ton in mid-October, up $1 from September but $12 lower than last year. Alfalfa hay averaged $107 per ton, up $4 from September but $20 lower than last October. Other hay, at $72 per ton, is down $4 from September and $10 below last October. All beef cattle were bringing an average of $83.00 per cwt. in mid-October, down $2.20 from September and $9.00 below the price last October. Cow prices, at $44.20 per cwt., are down $1.20 from September and $3.30 below the price last October. Steers and heifers averaged $83.80 per cwt., down $2.20 from September and $9.60 below October 2008. Calf prices in mid-October were $109.00 per cwt., down $3.00 from September and down $2.00 from October 2008. The all hog price of $33.10 per cwt. for mid-October is up 10 cents from September but down $10.80 from last October. Sow prices averaged $27.40, up $3.20 from September but $19.50 lower than October 2008. Barrow and gilt prices averaged $33.90 per cwt. in mid-October, down 40 cents from September and $9.60 below last October. Grain and oilseed prices by district are shown in the second table on the back of this release. UNITED STATES: The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in October is 135 percent of the 1990-92 base, up 9 points from September but 15 points below October 2008. The October All Crops Index, at 154, is up 11 points from September but 14 points below October 2008. The October Livestock and Products Index, at 109, is up 1 point from last month but down 18 points from October 2008.
