la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date March 13, 2005 LA-CW1105 Days suitable for fieldwork: 2.7 Soil moisture supplies: 3% short, 49% adequate and 48% surplus Field Crops Report Field activities were limited due to persistent wet conditions. Many fields were simply too wet to plow last week. Rice field work was restricted to water leveling. If field conditions begin to dry out, rice and corn planting will be in full swing next week. Some sugarcane producers were behind, putting out late winter herbicides due to wet conditions. Rust symptoms continued to show up in some wheat fields. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Continued wet conditions hampered vegetable producers' ability to prepare for spring planting. Strawberry producers were harvesting and selling their crop. As crawfish harvesting continued, producers are hopeful that warmer weather will improve the size of the crawfish. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Spring pastures continued to green up as fertilization and weed control was done as the weather permitted. Calving was in full swing, while some producers were beginning to report low levels of hay stocks.
