la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date June 05, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 4.1 Soil moisture supplies: 8% very short, 30% short, 47% adequate and 15% surplus Field Crops Report Louisiana received rain last week which helped relieve some drought stress on the crops. The rainfall for the state averaged 2 inches last week, but the state remained behind the yearly rainfall average by 6 inches. Field activities were limited last week due to wet conditions. Crop conditions improved due to the rain, but more rain was needed to continue growth. The rain helped alleviate some salt water problems in canals used for irrigating rice, but more rain was needed to replenish canals. Soybean planting resumed toward the end of the week. Sugarcane producers continued working fallow land. Sweet potato planting made good progress thanks to the improved soil moisture. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Harvesting of peaches made good progress last week. Vegetable production was in full swing as producers were harvesting and selling crops. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Pasture conditions showed improvement after the recent rains. Cattlemen were harvesting hay when weather conditions allowed.
