la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date June 12, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 4.3 Soil moisture supplies: 6% very short, 23% short, 52% adequate and 19% surplus Field Crops Report Scattered showers were received across the state last week. Field activities were limited due to wet conditions, but the rain continued to improve crop conditions and growth. Although rice producers were relieved to get the rain, they were beginning to see an increase in diseases and insects. Top-dressing and fungicides were being applied to rice fields. Wet conditions continued to slow soybean planting, and this could affect the acres producers are ultimately able to plant to soybeans for 2005. Sugarcane has shown a dramatic growth improvement with all the rain. Sweet potato planting continued to make good progress with adequate soil moisture. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Peach harvest continued to make good progress last week. Vegetable producers were beginning to see disease problems in some crops while harvesting and selling crops continued. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Pasture conditions saw additional improvement from the recent rains, but some pastures were too short for grazing. Some cattlemen were supplemental feeding due to shortness of pastures. Hay harvest continued as weather conditions allowed.
