la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date June 26, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 6.6 Soil moisture supplies: 21% very short, 42% short and 37% adequate Field Crops Report Dry conditions returned last week across the state. Louisiana was 6 inches below the average rainfall amount. Crops were showing signs of drought stress, and the disease development was low due to the dry conditions. Cotton conditions were 94 percent fair to excellent last week, as setting bolls reached 11 percent. Rice was showing good growth development, but some fields were being treated for water weevils. Sorghum planting reached 100 percent. Some soybean producers were treating fields for stinkbugs. Sweet potato planting made excellent progress reaching 92 percent, up from 75 percent last week. Wheat harvesting was completed. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Vegetable producers were harvesting crops and treating fields as needed. Harvesting of peaches continued reaching 56 percent, ahead of the 5-year average of 42 percent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Cutting of hay continued with some fields showing signs of stress. Pastures were also beginning to suffer visibly due to dry conditions.
