la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 03, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 6.4 Soil moisture supplies: 38% very short, 40% short and 22% adequate Field Crops Report Scattered showers were received across the state late last week, but more rain was needed to replenish soil moisture levels. Statewide, Louisiana continued to remain 7 inches below normal rainfall. Crop conditions continued to decline for all major crops. Rice producers were having difficulty maintaining water levels due to the dry, hot conditions. Field activities for rice consisted of applying herbicides and fertilizers. Soybean producers were applying herbicides and scouting fields for aerial blight. Sugarcane producers were working fallow land and scouting for borers. Sweet potato planting edged closer to completion. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Harvesting of peaches continued. Citrus producers were scouting for mites and spraying where necessary. Vegetable producers were selling crops. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Heat was causing high stress levels for livestock. Cattlemen were cutting hay and fertilizing pastures. Pasture conditions were deteriorating due to lack of rain.
