la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 17, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 4.9 Soil moisture supplies: 13% very short, 28% short, 52% adequate and 7% surplus Field Crops Report Scattered showers were received across the state again last week. Field activities were limited due to the rain. Many producers spent last week getting machinery ready for harvest season. Crop conditions continued to show some improvement from last week. Rice producers reported light disease and stink bug pressure in some fields. Rice producers were also preparing for harvest. Herbicides and fungicides were applied to soybean fields. Sugarcane producers were scouting fields for borers and preparing land for planting. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Vegetable producers were finishing up spring production. They began preparing land for summer and fall plantings. Watermelon producers have seen an average crop, but production was hindered by dry conditions during the fruit setting stage. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Pasture conditions were improving from the recent showers. Cutting of hay was slow last week due to the showers. Cattlemen were fertilizing pastures.
