la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date July 24, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 4.9 Soil moisture supplies: 15% very short, 26% short, 51% adequate and 8% surplus Field Crops Report Scattered showers were received again last week across the state, limiting field activities. Crop conditions continued to decline as more rain was needed to replenish soil moisture. Producers were beginning to find some insect and disease problems in crops. Corn and rice producers continued preparing for harvest season, which should be underway in a couple of weeks for some areas. Scouting for borers and preparing land for planting were the main activities for sugarcane producers last week. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Harvesting of peaches was limited last week due to the showers. Vegetable producers were planting summer tomatoes and other vegetables. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Cattlemen were cutting hay as weather permitted, and first cutting of hay was completed. Cattlemen were also fertilizing pastures.
