la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date August 7, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 5.9 Soil moisture supplies: 10% very short, 45% short, 37% adequate and 8% surplus Field Crops Report Scattered, isolated showers continued across the southern half of the state last week, while the northern portions received little to no rain. Corn producers began harvesting. Rice producers began harvesting early varieties of rice, as rice and soybean producers continued applying fungicides and insecticides. Sorghum harvest was in the beginning stages. Sugarcane producers continued scouting for borers and spraying fields as planting got underway. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Vegetable producers were working crops. Peach harvest edged closer to completion. Citrus producers continued spraying for whiteflies and aphids. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report More rain was needed even though pasture conditions continued to improve last week. Cattlemen cut hay, fertilized pastures and scouted for armyworms in addition to working livestock, weaning and marketing calves.
